My understanding is it depends on the background, if it's low contrast the white surround is used. There is also the white band around the fuselage that was used on home defense airplanes. Well done, Gary, and your usual pretty pictures. I built the Tamiya F-84G recently and used the decal strip method on it as well. I think the same crew designed this kit that did the P-47N.

I worked on tha splendid photo and my guess is it is a Revell missile of some type, I see white and grey plastic. Couldn't do anything with the haircut, sorry.
