Post by wjkunert »

Scale Hobbyist has the new 1/48 Tamiya P-38 in stock, ready to ship, for $68.

10-18 Just got an e mail from MegaHobby with a tracking number for my Tamiya P-38. Should be here by Monday or Tuesday.

Nice - that's actually a kit I'd like to build, although I might wait and see if they bring out an ETO variant in the future.

Are you talking about the deep chin radiator J & L types flown in 1944/1945?

That would be nice... :hmm:

Um... Possibly :hmm: I'm not up on P-38 types - I assume there's a difference in the types used by the 8th and 9th and those used in the pacific.

The 8th AF P-38 Groups started with the early types like the Tamiya kit, but switched to the J as soon as those came into service in 1944. There were only a few P-38 groups in the 8th, and by the second half of 1944 those had converted to Mustangs which had the same long range, but better results in the bomber escort mission, that was the primary mission of 8th AF fighter groups. The 9th AF P-38 groups all used the J and later L types. Since their role was tactical, and not strategic bomber escort, and the P-38 was superior in the tactical bombing and ground support role, they kept their P-38s.

Look at the profile of the chin scoop radiators between the left and right columns of these P-38s. Up thru the H model, the lightning retained the same type shown on the D here. Most differences in version were internal. The J introduced the deeper radiator, and then again only minor external differences between it and the ultimate P-38, the L. The M was basically a L modified into a two seat radar equipped night fighter.

That's some cool info Carlos . So could you use this kit to model one of the early types used by the 8th?

Yes, you would just need the markings. The 20th FG and 55th FG were the first two P-38 groups in the 8th. I am almost positive that both groups used the G or H in late 1943 before they received Js. I will look into that.

I did a little internet hunting. The 55th took the H into combat 1st, in mid Autumn of 1943, followed the the 20th shortly afterwards. They replaced their Hs with Js in the mid winter months of 1944, so by spring time both Groups had the J.
