Another resin casting: finally succes!

Post by BorgR3mc0 »

I tried my hand at resin casting once more. I bought new resin because the grey stuff I had was the wrong stuff. The new resin is specifically for casting, very liquid. I also got my pressure tank in working order.

So the recipe for succes was:
1: new rubber moulds, these where pressure casted at 4bar. You can see the difference in the pictures.
2: beter resin: this liquid stuf was far easier then the gunk I had. I squirted it in the mould using a syringe.
3: apply pressure and wait for two hours.

I also did an ambient casting as a comparison. That one actually was quite nice. However the mould has a few bubbles and had some residue from earlier experiments.

Nice work!
To make each build less crappy than the last one. Or, put another way, "Better than the last one, not as good as the next one!"..

Not fair to go without telling us where you got the resin and what the name of the resin is! Parts look great. Pressure all the way to 60 psi?

I have got the resin from a Dutch shop called polyesthershoppen.nl. But the resin itself is from a company called Huntsman and it is called RenCast FC52.

And yes, I put 4 bar of pressure on it so that is about 60psi. My pressure tank is certified for 80 psi but I like to work well within safety limits with these kind of things.

Also important to note. I did not use filler. Huntsman makes a filler for this resin but it will become more like a paste. I wanted it to be very liquid. Given the small size of the casting the material used was minimal (5 grams) so the benefits of using filler would be very limited.

So.... are you planning on opening shop for SPAM members only? :giggles:
I'm glad you're having success at this.

I couldn't find a supplier in the US although they do have plants making things here. I found some resin that has a 12 minute working time that I am going to try, and I now have a pressure pot like yours. Thanks for the help. I have been making resin parts for some time using vacuum but I can see pressure has it's uses as well. A combination of the two might be the best.
