USS Bonhomme Richard On Fire!

Post by Medicman71 »

The USS Bonhomme Richard LDH-6 is on fire at the pier in San Diego. It started yesterday and it's really bad. Looks like it might be a total loss.

Likewise! What a total mess. At best it’s gonna take lots of money and time to repair her. This is a huge screw up. And if she is a total loss? To lose an amphibious assault carrier at dock in port? I can’t even begin to list the ramifications.

Fire is still burning today... the foremast has collapsed and the island around the bridge is buckling... not looking good at all.

She would have been better off. At dockside, there was only a skeleton crew onboard, the firefighting system was disabled (from what has been put out), and sectional compartment integrity was compromised due to work being performed onboard. At sea, she would have had her full crew aboard who are all trained in shipboard firefighting, and the compartments with the fire could have been isolated quickly.

Man the island is toast... literally. But at least it looks like they are making headway with the fire. A lot less smoke visible now.... probably not much left to burn above the fire...
