Frankenbird SBD Dauntless 1/72

Post by CallSignOWL »

I figured since the old forum went kaput, Ill restart this thread here.
So, a little background on this one

While waiting for stuff to dry on my -110 build, I decided to go crazy. I pulled out that 'ol Testors rebox of the hawk SBD--you know the one. The one with no cockpit, no wheel well, and markings scribed on the fuselage....and went to town.

The goal of this one is to see what I can scratch-build from plastic and my spares box.

pics for those unfamiliar with the kit

star insignia scribed into the fuselage? Why oh why?
Image

interior devoid of any detail, with only plastic benched for the crew to perch on. And the Crew? …lets not go there.

Image

recessed panel lines on a ’50s-era kit? aww, yah. But no gear wells?? Awww, no.

next comes the hacking and slashing!

good stuff Owl. hope to see it finished soon!
To make each build less crappy than the last one. Or, put another way, "Better than the last one, not as good as the next one!"..

You can see the to-do list on the instructions here :P

Cut off the old cowling, no going back now!
Image

Cut off the flaps, and took a power drill to the wheel wells...
Image

some clear plastic packaging came to my rescue here, and I used it for most the build. Good way
to recycle, no?

what the whaaa?

I am crazy!

scratchbuilt a new engine from a shampoo bottle cap, and spare road wheels. Fits perfectly.

The cowl flaps are cut from that same clear plastic, and the exhaust stubs are machine guns that I cut apart and trimmed
