Part 1: From the Hanger
This Fokker Dr.1, Serial No. 426/17 (Wk Nr 2010), belonged to Vzfw Otto Esswein while serving with Jasta 26 at Halluin-Ost in May 1918. It had the standard Jasta 26 colors (black cowling, with wide black and white bands around the fuselage and tail), and Esswein's personal symbol of a black "E" on a white band on each side of the fuselage and on the top wing. Despite the over-painting, the crosses still showed indications of having been altered from earlier versions. Esswein is believed to have scored his final 4 victories flying the triplane, bringing his score to 12. He was later killed in action on 21 July 1918, after the unit had transitioned out of the Dr.1s in June.
