More work on the ship. Folding PE ladders (they give you a jig to help fold them correctly), building tiny guns and the fire control radar (I'm assuming that's what it is).

Which is actually a combined radar and optical director system. The “horns” on the sides are a stereoscopic optical rangefinder. If radar fails, the optical system can be used.

There are plenty of good books. You may want to narrow it down a bit... era, type, nationality... Ships is such a huge area for subject matter choices.

The various editions of Ships and Aircraft of The US Fleet are great for all sorts of reference by era. I had the 1977 edition and would love to get some of the more recent editions.
