speedgraflex wrote:Thanks for explaining, Clint. I have a few EagleCals sets just never used them. I remember think the 1/48 Dora set was going to be troublesome. When you wrote about the Blue 6 did you mean you thought it did not settle down enough in the opening around the hatch? Your work looks great!!
Thank you Bruce. The Blue 9 is two decals so is the blue circle and the tail markings. I don't like doubling up decals makes them harder to settle into panel lines like you said.

John thanks for looking in. I thought the same thing the color profile with the Eaglecals show them being darker than the actual decals and calls out that they are RLM24. After looking for a mix for RLM24 I realized this was a lot darker color than the decals.

Small update here
After I let the decals set up I went about starting weathering. I like to use flory wash and so used it to start out. some of the panel lines wasn't very deep to begin with and after primer paint and clear gloss some wasn't deep enough to pick up the flory so I went back with Mig enamel dark pen wash and that bit a lot better.
After that was all dry I shot it with a coat of Mr. Super clear flat.
the color call out for Blue 9 says that it has a old eagle wing on both sides that is faded and heavily stained over. So I masked the area first/

Sprayed the eagle wing on both sides

I then mixed up some Tamiya Smoke and built it up to the level shown on the Eaglecals color profile.
Image
Also painted the props (forgot to take photo of that) and the blue for the hub and cowl
Image
I think its a close match to the decals and they are far enough separated from each other they should blend together well. It's about equal parts Tamiya XF-23 Light Blue XF-18 Medium Blue and X-23 Clear Blue.
Thanks for looking in.

Weathering looks good Clint!

I usually go over all of the exterior panel lines with a scriber before I put any paint on the model. Usually right after I cut the pieces off the sprue. Not necessarily to make the lines deeper but to make them consistent. I hate when you're at the weathering stage and you find a shallow line that won't hold a wash.

It never crossed my mind to do that, seems like common sense now that I think about it. Thanks for the info.

Bravo. That blue mix is spot on! Also the Eagle Wing black sides and your approach explained more to me about my A-1 then a lot of photo research did. There is nothing like a physical model with the level of detail you put into it better. Huzzah. I could actually see that the Eagle Wing could be there underneath tons of engine smoke. You’re doing great work!
