Aurora 1/30 King Kong (1933) Resin Upgrade: Ann Darrow
Main Title Card for the 1933 film
The Aurora Plastics Kit
1964 brought a few changes for the Aurora Longbox Monsters series. Until then, all kits had been based on popular monsters of roughly human proportion. The two new kits that year, Godzilla and King Kong broke that tradition, and were released in a scale other than the more or less standard 1/8. Godzilla was sculpted at roughly 1/200 scale, while Kong is 1/30.
Original Kit Issued: 1964-1968 as Catalog #465
Plastic: black/beige
Sculptor: attributed to Adam “Larry” Ehling
Box art: James Bama
The Pestilence Labs Updated Figure for Cult TV Man
Reference for a figure sculpt for a soon to be released resin figure upgrade. One of my buddies is releasing this figure as either a complete version or a fitted version. He already released an upgraded head for the kit. I am uploading my reference information, shots of the resin figure and my painting process to follow.
Issued: 2021
Beige resin
Sculptor: Joe Simon
Figure reference (colorized) of actress Fay Ray which I will be using as a painting reference. I have seen many colorized versions of stills from the film with either a green dress or a yellow one. I am choosing a green.
Kong reference as well (behind the scenes) of the stop motion puppets used in 1933

You found something
"Surely I have made my meaning plain? I intend to avenge myself upon you, Admiral. I have deprived your ship of power, and when I swing 'round, I intend to deprive you of your life."

Oh man.... I fondly remember that King Kong kit. Godzilla, Mothra and Ghidra too.

Oh yes, I first saw these Aurora kits built and painted with great care by a Lithuanian Steel Mill worker in his fully furnished basement (prototype man cave). I am getting paints tonight or tomorrow. Since I need Kong’s hand, arm, chest for photography of the finished figure I ordered a complete kit repop from Atlantis which comes with rocks and palm trees, and glow-in-the-dark components too.

Basing skin and hair color choices off of my actress friend Emily. I find I need someone real to work from in order to approach things realistically.
