1/72 Airfix Gnat and Special Hobby Ajeet

Post by BorgR3mc0 »

A double build, that Airfix Gnat and Special Hobby Ajeet.

Both are pretty nice kits. The Ajeet is a bit better than the Gnat but had some difficulty with the unclear placement of the cockpit. The Gnat is easier but also a bit less refined.

I want to finish the Gnat in yellow: color of the Yellowjacks, precursors of the Red Arrows.
The Ajeet will get tiger stripes so it need some yellow to.

Oh wow! That is gonna be quite yellow! I’m curious to see what other colors will go on here.

Noce paint work. That yellow looks great.
To make each build less crappy than the last one. Or, put another way, "Better than the last one, not as good as the next one!"..

I masked the yellow on the Ajeet and put on a layer of black primer as a base coat for the aluminium.

Looking good! So one will be in overall yellow and the other in black and yellow? :hmm:

The Gnat will be all yellow. The Ajeet will be aluminium with a yellow/tiger stripe spine and tail.

And the aluminium is on! I used Lifecolor thinned with Future. They say you can use water but in my experience it then beads and pools. Even with Future it looks like a lumpy finish halfway but the end result is quite nice and durable. The masking is off, I do need to do a few touch ups but nothing big (because this is a tiny plane!)

Very cool.

I've built the Airfix Red Arrows Gnat. Yes it's very tiny
