I think that it was on loan to the Navy at China Lake to test the Sidewinder on the aircraft. The Sidewinder was a Navy design originally, that later was adapted by the USAF.

That would be cool to do. And Kinetic is coming out with a F-104C this year.

I do believe that the China Lake F-104 is an A. But it’s fairly easy to make an A from a C.
