That’s a M109A2/A3. A2 was new build vehicles while A3 was the A1 rebuilt to A2 configuration… IIRC… :hmm:

But it could be an A4 or A5, which had internal upgrade differences…

Carlos, back in the early '90s, I recall seeing a train loaded with armored vehicles in the Temple, Texas trainyard. They wore a similar paint job as that SP 109 in the pics. But, they were tanks, and not Abrams, but smaller. At first I thought they were Bradleys but they had a bigger main gun. I've wondered since if they might have been something like the Cadilac-Gage Stingray (which they did resemble), being shipped to a purchaser elsewhere? I only got a quick glimpse of them as we drove on an overpass above the yard. Always sort of intriguing to me...

Gary, the Stingray is possible if they were heading from a factory to a port for export. Could they have been M60s? The NATO camo would make sense because by then, the Army was mostly in NATO camo by then. Those were still around for Guard and Reserve units in the early 90’s. Hell, the Marines did not get rid of the majority of the M60’s until after Desert Storm. They were the last US tankers to take those into combat. Although the Turks were using updated M60s in Syria recently, so there is still some life left in the old girls.

No, I don't think they were M-60s. They didn't appear big enough to be one of those but the Stingray possibility is there as they might well have been headed for Houston, and then shipped on to Thailand. I knew the U.S. Army wasn't using them, and back in that period of time, trains loaded with army stuff headed to the coast, were common sights since Ft. Hood is only 50 miles west of Cameron. The tanks, whatever they may have been, were a curious sighting.

Much like a mysterious train my wife and I saw one night here in Cameron, maybe five years ago. It was made up of only six or seven unusual looking cars, parked on a remote side track. The engines were running and a few lights were on. We drove past a couple times without seeing anyone. Now, whether anyone was "seeing" us is another matter. I imagine there is much we don't know about, moving along the rail and roads of this land.
