High Speed Aluminium / High Speed Silver

Post by KSaarni »

Hi all,

struggling to get a better understanding, what is a colour called either "High Speed Aluminium" or "High Speed Silver".

By googling some information appears, such as apparently such color was used in British planes in the 60's, perhaps even back to 50's

Cannot really find any good reference to tell, how to mix such a color.

Though, the instructions (it's the Folland Gnat) the colour is defined as a mix of Silver and Flat white...
No ratios or other details.. And besides, a combination of "sort-of-metallic" silver and a flat white color sounds a little bit special..

Any better definitions ?

Some gents had this discussion on another place some time ago. Think they had some useful answers.

Personally I have nothing to add.

Thank you very much Mostrich! That was indeed very useful link!
Pretty many usable ideas, i think I am fine now and will be able to "choose" the right color!

High speed silver looks kind of like silver doped linen. But its usually on metal. It looks like dull aluminium.

It actually goes back to the 30s on between the wars RAF fighters. It also saw use in the Far East on some aircraft in WWII such as the Mosquito. And of course in the immediate post war years on many RAF aircraft types:Spitfires, Tempests, Vampires, Meteors...
