Trumpeter 1/32 Stuka

I took a break from model building yesterday evening, to hang out with my wife and binge-watch episodes of the Dick Van Dyke show on Netflix. Normally I have a half hour or so to work on models after the babies go to sleep but last night we decided we needed some solid couch time to relax and decompress, and I heartily agreed. “It’ll still be there in the morning, and it’ll be even better after a good night’s sleep too!” I said.

And it’s been been a productive morning for me here at Kenny X’s Reichs Winzigkleines Flugzeugwerks! On top of getting all my work-related stuff taken care of, and then some, I got started on Step #2!

Kicked it off by getting this little guy built-up:



And then the test-fits commenced:





I took more care this go-round in removing the cowl parts from the sprue, so as not to repeat the “gaping holes” issue I had with the fuselage for my G2 LOL. Trimmed the parts out carefully, sanded the nuns down gently, and put the two halves together. The fit was about as perfect as I could ask for. I taped it together, and inserted the engine. It presented no significant problems. So I disassembled it, temporarily affixed the subassembly I’d built earlier this morning to the engine, then installed both halves of the cowling around it. No issues. That made me happy. I’ll get this stuff primed a little later today on my lunch break. Then paint weather those parts and robably build the propeller and spinner too if I have time this evening and the weather cooperates.

Where'd the engine go??? LOL... I know you didn't go all out in detailing the engine but its a shame not to see more of it. Not a criticism because I've done the exact same thing before...


There's a fully painted engine in there somewhere!

LOL John, I did go pretty bananas though. And yeah, it’ll be entombed in the cowling before too long. Won’t see any of it without a pen light and a magnifier and even then, you’ll only catch maybe 5% of it if that. But I know it’s there, and I’ve posted pictures of the work I did on it. So there’s that at least

Shots are lookin good, bud. I wanted to flip back a few entries to “ticklish business,” which is a term that is quite perfect, and your reference to Ishmael... I first thought of Ishmael from Melville’s “Moby Dick,” then I started wondering if you meant the biblical Ishmael son of Abraham... would you provide context?

The engine looks spectacular... and John’s reaction was similar to mine... seeing the work disappear within the cowling leaves behind a feeling of melancholia.

I was referring to the Ishmael from Moby Dick, Bruce. I copped that turn of phrase straight from Melville. I like that book a lot.

And yes, I feel just a little melancholy too, at buttoning up the cowl around that engine. But hey, I learned a whole lot from painting and weathering it. Stuff I can take with me into my next big build! And hey, check this out- that Tamiya ME109 G6 I bought, comes with two cowls, a closed on and an open one, and magnets which allow you to temporarily display it with one cowling on, then switch to the other! So I take what I learned from this engine, bring it to that build, add a nice airing harness and a bit more fine detailing, and BOOM! An engine I can easily display if I want to! So it’s all good. A new one will live because of this one.

Horten. Seeing that word reminds me of that word “Croatan” they found carved into the tree when they went looking for that missing settlement. It resonates like that.
