"Unbroken"

Post by Stikpusher »

Looks like we have another WWII film inbound for Christmas time. This is the story of a local fellow here from So.Cal. who became a POW in WWII. Plus a whole lot more. His biography, by the same name is required reading in High Schools here in the AP classes. I guess I need to borrow the book from my youngest to read before it comes out.

Yes, it is. In the past few years I can count the amount of movies that I have actually wanted to see in the theater on probably one, certainly on both, of my hands. This and "Fury" will up that count by two. Much like today's music, Hollywood just does not get me excited about much anymore. Occasionally you stumble across something good in all the formulated junk spewn out by the entertainment industry nowadays.

Totally agree, Stik. Always these "part III, IV, V - movies just because the first one was a hit. The big studios won't take the risk of going new ways. Intelligent, complex stories? No, the audience' too stupid.
On the other hand there are so many movies that proved the opposite.

Best film I saw in 2014 so far: No Turning Back (US/GB). 90 min one man driving a car, making phone calls most of the time. Boring? Not one darn second. Budget: 1,500,000$. And not one special effect. ;)

A side note to this: today after my morning duties at court, I went to a favorite restaurant in Torrance for a bite to eat, and passed by his High School where he first made a name for himself so many years ago. The Marquis in front of the school had a memorial dedication in his memory posted upon it. I thought that was very cool, honoring a true hometown hero long after he is gone.
