Nice touch with that control stick Bruce. I tend to lighten my pit areas a bit myself but I usually lighten the topside surfaces and leave the sidewalls and other vertical surfaces a darker shade for a shadowing effect.

My Dad’s modeling mantra was “Gloss has depth,” which is why I used semi-gloss on the seat. Enamels are capable of some subtle tonal variations. I think giving a “one look approach” takes away from what really exists around us—in nature as well as man made objects there is a subtle to not so subtle tension between glossy and matte surfaces.

Good to note... I was tempted to mention the lightness of the RLM66. Are you doing all of your pics and posting on your phone?

Indeed I am. I apologize, John. I used to be very consistent with when and how I photographed my work regardless of camera platform. My white balance is generally consistent, my background and lighting are consistent, but my developing techniques are pushing the exposure and protecting the blacks and knocking a little warmth away from the initial capture.

Last night I was reading the fella who calls himself Doog’s thoughts on using a Nikon Coolpix versus an Android phone, but really times have changed so much that I can tweak an iPhone to get quite close to my Sony 7 series cameras. Most model builders use a lot of light which is the weak spot for all digital photography.

I am now being more careful and as a result of seeing your results with your photo booth. I am considering a cobbled together version. I definitely want to use my rolls of seamless cut down to several sizes and a folding semi rigid framing of walls. I talked to my buddy Matt about this a few weeks ago and we were fixing to build something... then the fella went and got engaged to his gal. I don’t think he is coming up for air any time soon!

In referring to what you wrote , that's exactly what I did with the engine compartment on my 454SS truck. Varying finishes of the same color gives not only depth but more of a 3D as well as a more realistic look .

Just look at some black boots with nylon uppers. The whole boot is black. But the fabric upper and the leather lower and rubber soles all look distinctly different due to the materials, their textures, and they way they reflect light.

Yesterday afternoon I photographed the cockpit the way I would when I first joined up here in February 2015—late afternoon light from the side, with the piece on top of a clean sheet of A4 paper. It’s been awhile since I had any time during the day to do this. I find that most of my model building time is in the early evening.



I still have belts and foot controls to do. I took the night off from this project to draw. I needed to change my schedule anyway. With the change of season upon us, a step away from thinking and doing work on this project was beneficial. This is becoming a build-novel! I have read these build-novels on other forums before. I actually very much enjoy the build-novel although it may be out of fashion. Many builds today seem journaled or delivered by telegraph. It’s a different approach. Maybe this has something to do with publishing platform. The use of the phone does make an all in one solution. My only limitations are signal and battery, really.

Clint— Yeah! I’m excited and hopeful just a touch of that sheen is picked up once the walls go up around the cockpit. I think it will. Or at least I believe by building this detail there is a chance it will be seen naturally. Thanks so much!
