I use Evergreen styrene card, rods and strips. I find that this has a more predictable consistency then sprues and scrap pieces.

I started the painting. The dashboard will be done with decals. According to my reference pics, the cockpit was grey and all the consoles turquoise. The current phase is a base, decals will go on, then wash, detail painting lastly flat coat.

Also the pilots. I am painting all three and will pick my favourite two for the cockpit. Instructions say blue overalls but my reference pics tell me olive drab vests over a camouflage overall.

Aside from VDV and Spetznaz type units, the Soviets did not begin to widely issue camo uniforms to their forces until the later half of the 80’s. Flight gear was often a standard service uniform with a flight jacket and helmet. For the most part their service uniform were khaki brown in warmer areas or OD in temperate areas.

Thanks for the detaled info. Maybe I can paint a white and blue striped shirt so that they are Spetnaz? :giggles: or just a new coat ....

Current state of affairs: I am doubling down on the Spetnaz pilot: they where flying in this unit for conversion. That is my story and I am sticking with it (I have no historical evidence but I like those camouflage uniforms. Nonetheless thanks for the information Stik!)

The cockpit is ready for a wash, instruments have been done with decals. Mostly cut versions of the kit decals and one side console from and Academy A-10.

After a wash, flat coat and detail painting the cockpit looks like this:

I am quite happy with it. The scratchbuilding was fun and not to involved. The figures make the cockpit nice and busy. As pointed out by Stikpusher the uniforms probably should have been kakhi but I am happy with how they turned out.
