Awesome cockpit work, Kenny! Sometimes, I'll put a gob of white glue or CA glue on those small PE knob ends to give them some volume.

Thanks for the guidance on the oil colors. Couldn't do much shopping during the weekend so I resorted to some EBay sniping and picked up a couple sets of these...

I am not familiar with these products in particular BUT- I haven’t been disappointed yet with anything I’ve used from Mig. So good luck with them!

Meantime, I’m gonna try that white glue trick you mentioned next time I sit down to work on this bad-boy.

John, yeah buddy! This one here is what made me want to do this aircraft:

This was a pilot I had not heard of. So I read up on him just now. A short but bright combat career. Flew with the Condor Legion in Spain and scored several victories there. Later assigned to 5.JG-51. The 4th Luftwaffe fighter pilot to score 20 victories. Shot down and killed early during that Battle of Britain on August 16, 1940.

Yeah, man, once again -and this is what I love about building models- I pick a subject because “Boy oh boy that really looks cool” and then I read-up about the pilot and fall down one or several of history’s interesting rabbit holes.

Another neat thing here is that I was able to dig up some photos from 5.JG-51 of their aircraft with the engines exposed. This is going to come in handy soon, when I start building and detailing the engine.

I’d really like to find one of this particular Black 1’s engine with a legible number on the side. My kit includes decals for that. In the picture just above they claim that’s Black 1, but I believe it is a different aircraft of Tietzen’s since there’s no mottled camouflage on the sides as in the other photos. So that engine number probably isn’t the one I’m shooting for, and it doesn’t really matter, because I can’t make it out anyhow.

Nevertheless, they’ll be good reference material for the up-coming engine build-up and painting/weathering.

All that said, another thing I wish to visit and research is this:



The waviness of the splinter camo there. It looks cool, but it also doesn’t look correct to me. I think this was artistic license. But I want to refer back to the article that Carlos posted yesterday about Luftwaffe paint schemes, and dig up whatever I can on my own to see if they ever actually did this. Maybe they did, but my gut, based on what I’ve learned about these early Emils, was that they kept the lines in the splinter camo straight. So we’ll see where that goes.
