I say first think up which theater you want it to be in... ETO? PTO? CBI? Each had their own guidelines for markings. Then a nationality. I remembr reding a novel many years ago about the invasion of Japan in 1946 that was nased off of actual Allied and Japanese plans for the assault and defense, based upon the premise that the Trinity A-Bomb test in July 1945 failed. The author did a skillful job weaving conjecture , fiction and planning together in the book.
The dropping of camouflage paint at the factory happened in early 1944 when air superiority was far from assured. Hence the semi prevelance of camo over bare metal seen in the ETO, especially prevellant among certaon Bomb Groups and Fighter Groups. In the PTO and CBI it became more of a "flying circus" attitude towrds paint schemes, within the guidlines of theater ID markings so a lot more creative leeway to be had there. And yes, I gotta agree with Manny that pin up nose art is always a crowd pleaser.

That is the fun thing of Whiffs, as long as you have a scenario anything goes. How about this: the UK fell after the battle of Britian, Germany even got as far as iceland. After opening the attack on the USSR they start an bombing campagne against the USA in 1946 (duh!) with the new Amerika bomber [insert imaginary Amerika bomber design]. To counter this the US used P-51H stationed on Greenland to intercept the bomber. Et voila. a scenario for a white washed winter P-51H.....
Just have some fun, build what you like, you can always figure out a story afterwards.

I'd go with an Air National Guard unit. I always like the colorful stripy tails on a nmf.
