Hey Kenny! I'm not actively building at this stage but I'm starting to get my mojo back by reading modeling posts. I really like your work on this Emil. I think the scraps of tape to achieve your chipping effects was brilliant and turned out very well. And I feel your disappointment on the RLM02 overspray. I think field-applied oversprays like this are among the most difficult to achieve from a modeling perspective. It's really hard to get the "scale" of the spray demarcation to look right and that difficulty is magnified as you drop down in scale. One of the reasons that I paused my Fw190D-13 build onto the N1K2 was that the field overspray of Yellow 10 freaked me out. Still does.

Also, like you mention, the overspray pattern can all but obliterate any delicate pre-shading that was achieved by the previous coats. That's almost unavoidable as you put multiple coats over the pre-shade base. But there are ways to achieve depth and modulation using post-shading techniques. I personally like the salt-fading technique and the spraying a very dilute mix of brown/black to highlight panel lines and joints. And remember, those high-contrast black and white crosses on the wings will do a lot to crush the tonal variation anyway.

A final hurdle is the disappointment that one feels covering a neat, sharp-edged splinter scheme, which was perfectly executed, with something messy like a hand-applied overspray. I felt pretty meh about my whitewash over the nice RLM 74/75 scheme on my G-14 build. Sometimes you just have to give some time to your mind to trust what your hands have done.

I think the your overspray turned out very good actually. It matches, in my mind's eye, what the Luftwaffe ground crews were trying to do to break up that hard-edged splinter scheme. I think you are a lot closer to achieving your vision than you think. Remember the overspray is just one of the many layers to this build. It's not the first and its not the last. Later layers, especially the markings, will make you see your work in a different light.

I was, I think, grossly over-estimating my skill level when I picked that paint scheme. But all told, it was a solid learning experience.

And I’ve decided Pips’ Emil another chance. I’m putting him back in the regular rotation. In the meantime he’s safe in the jig.

Some dry brushing on the G6 cockpit tomorrow, but most of my modeling time tomorrow will be spent on re-doing Pips’ splinter camo and touching up the light blue where the ammonia ate through it.

My take on RLM 66. It’s Tamiya German Grey- 5 : Tamiya Flat White- 1 ... I lightened each successive coat a little bit, sprayed more layers in areas which would not get a whole lot of light when sealed up,’then sprayed thin coats of plain Tamiya German Grey (unlightened) to get it how I wanted. Then dry brushing Model Master Dunklegrau.
