When I was a kid, my dad used to subscribe to Proceedings magazine, published by the US Naval Institute. The magazine was full of ads from various defense contractors hawking their latest products to the types that read the magazine in the Pentagon, Congress, or acquisition businesses. Your Hornets nest comment reminds me of an ad from McDonnel Douglas in the magazine when the F-18 was in testing for purchase. It had a dramatic painting of some F/A+18s flying low on the water away from a carrier low over a stormy sea with the tag line “Hornets nest on land or sea, and sting in any weather”.

That’s a neat story. I had no idea the Hornet was that old!

The Legacy Hornet's first flew in 78 and into fleet service in the early 80's.

Yes, but even when they were in flight development during the Carter years, there was talk of axing the program to save money. LTV was pitching a new version of the A-7 to the Navy, and the Marines were quite content with their F-4s at the time, the types that the Hornet replaced. Both types were considered superior in their respective roles, Light attack and Fighter, compared to the Hornet. Although the Hornet gave both types a dual capability that neither had possessed before.
