Thanks, gents. I am still trying to figure out the color of the bulkhead.

That's a tough one Bruce. In the first photo it looks to be the same color as the fuselage, just in shadow. But the second photo it looks a lot darker. I don't know what it's made of but I would guess maybe a stained wood.

Thanks so much for your ideas, Clint. I agree. I was initially going to buy a piece of basswood sheet (of the kind used for architectural models or ships too) and form it to the correct opening size, then I thought I was going too far in the pursuit of an accurate finish. The kit instructions describe the cockpit bulkhead as “varnished natural plywood.” Here is another photo:

You may be right, Lyle. Have a look at this recently produced cross-section: one half of the rear bulkhead is depicted as black, the other half is in its natural finish. Also note that at least part of the cockpit interior may have received additional sheathing behind the control surfaces. I tried adding detail to the image, but out of respect for the artist I am using a low quality version of his file.
