Wow... it looks as you've laid down a nice coat of high quality car wax. You gotta love a shiny, glossy look of a black truck or automobile. Well done!!

Thanks fellas. Some semi-bad news. I had to completely start over with the paint job on this one. It wasn't so much a bad paint job as it was all those Alclad silver flakes I could see ALL throughout the body after I got my clear coat on. I also noticed some mediocre gloss coverage down low on the body (remember what I was saying about it being easy to miss?) No worries.............the initial paint coverage was thin enough to where I was able to shoot another coat of black over everything and will be letting that cure out for another 3-5 days and then it's off to flames again. I should be clearing at the beginning of next week. I look at this as another opportunity to get even better with my flame work and gloss finishes.

Okeedokee folks!!

Back on the mend after the disaster. I just simply couldn't believe what had happened as I was applying the gloss coat on this. One one hand it was the picture perfect finish with maybe a touch up of wet sanding and polishing here and there.................on the other............a mess!!! Somehow the Alclad had managed to get ALL OVER the cab and hood. The only thing I can think of is that during the fading process where I tried to polish the Alclad in which to achieve a subtle effect (which was turning out great BTW) I managed to get it all over the place but couldn't see it. If you look closely you'll see it:







So..........I was pondering.......... . My initial thought was to dunk it in brake fluid to strip the paint and start completely over. But the paint layers are thin enough to where I could shoot another thin layer of black on and start over......................so....................I did!! Man did the finish ever turn out so much better than the first go round.

Here we are back at square one............stay tuned.................flames coming back up!



Another foul up and a recovery to add to the mix. I was working with the grille and headlamps and decided to use some clear nail polish to adhere the headlight lenses to the buckets. If you've ever given this any thought..................PASS!!!! It quickly deteriorated/ stripped the chrome underneath!!
Kit #3 had to be acquired to fix this. I started over and this time used some Tamiya acrylic clear to adhere them. I'll call this a "save".

So, you used the initial painting stages, all the way to the clear as a base for a new stage of color coat? Is that what I just read?

I have to applaud you on your ability to roll with the punches as well as congratulate you on a job well done. New color stage looks great. Flames Deux will be next!

"Why not" was the way I looked at it. I mean the clear was a nice and smooth base and it's lacquer so it's definitely gonna stick.

And yes... lacquer does rule! Man oh man.

Didja ever experiment with lacquer on any planes? I’m going to try squirting Mr Hobby-Gunze satin gloss in olive drab to see how that looks against the AK MiG AMMO acrylic. Both are better than good brands. Maybe I should go hunt for Model Master?
