Hello. Yes, let’s get some tattoos. As I was about to do some character designs for a comic book, I thought I would warm up with sketches of the Maybach HL 42 in my most likely third version so far. Since I am learning so much both by doing versions as well as research, I wanted to take this a little further along towards an accurate representation of the most important elements, and I wanted to see these all together first on paper. So. Here is my very latest engine version sketchup with radiator, connected together by a brass post. I show this elongated to clarify the construction elements. By joining the radiator and engine, I believe this will make a solid design.



I added to the sketch I made earlier after I noticed that the exhaust pipe apparently angles over the steering column and passes through the armored flooring; at least, I believe it does travel down to the armored base plate protecting the engine! Does anyone know?

That's an interesting question Bruce - Whilst I can't imagine the exhaust NOT leaving the engine bay, It's hard to believe they'd have put a big hole through the armor plate either.

You'll have to scan your exterior reference shots and see if you can see where the exhaust sticks out - that should give you an idea.

What comic are you working on?

In "my" 251/1 the exhaust pipe, or "Auspuff" as it is (?) in German comes like this...
But how the pipe is bending and turning between this and the engine, have not seen really any good reference pictures.

Guessing it should be pretty similar with the 250 ?

I think the pictures will help Bruce, the pipe does not go through the floor, but out through the left side..

Thank you so much, Stuart and Kari, for checking and reasoning out the answer to where the auspuff goes. Indeed, the auspuff travels out the side of the 250. In much the same way as “Kari’s” 251, the auspuff travels from the engine our through the front driver’s side quarter panel and into a muffler and catalyst which is itself protected by a metal cover. From the muffler (What is the German for “muffler?”) there is a short pipe which fits through an opening in the outer frame of the vehicle. Basically the muffler sits on a running board, and the exhaust exits the side, which means I have another alignment point to consider when building all of these components.

Actually thinking about it, when I watched the Dirty Dozen again a few weeks ago, I remember thinking something about the exhaust on that half track they escaped on. I thought it was blooming loud!

Thanks so much for your reply, Stuart. I am definitely looking forward to the Bronco as well. I was gonna just jump for the 1/32 Kitty Hawk version, but the 1/48 Hawk with resin modifications is a project I feel is right up my construction... alley? street? I am also researching the best way to strip paint of butyrate slot car bodies (pre-1970) which may be Liquid Plumber, but I am not sure.

With at least four vintage slot car bodies in the estate sale find, I have to figure out a way to safely remove the old finishes. I hope to be able to refinish two of the cars.
