Good suggestion, Bruce. You have a good master in Part 44. I'm thinking you could use this part to trace the shape onto your candidate curve plastic piece.

Sometimes its hard to get good coverage with red. Laying down a lighter background color may make it easier.

I started today to construct the complicated engine panels.

While testfitting I realised that either the carpet monster, wastebasket monster or any other monster has taken piece nr B45 !!

It's gone, it's MIA... and I am afraid that its KIA ...

So what to do? I went on Revell Germanys homepage and filled a "Service Form", asking if they could provide me with the missing piece B45.
I really hope they will. To scratchbuild that piece is not impossible, but nothing I really would want to do... But let's see...

Nevertheless, this will not be a show-stopper... I will continue attaching the panels and continue "like nothing would happen", that I can ! :-D

Oh man! I was thinking about you and that cowling today! I hope they can sort you out.

Meanwhile, your painting is looking good so far! I’m loving the way that red is going over the black.

I’m sure that the part will turn up... hopefully sooner rather than later.

Thanks guys!

@John: I expected some challenges to put red on black, but did not expect to need this much paint.. Seriously, ½-bottle used and a careful estimation tells, I have painted so far 10% of the fuselage.. Might be I need to shoot a layer of lighter color, especially underneath...

Meanwhile today I received an answer from Revell, telling me more or a less to take it easy and informing the handling times to be 2-3 weeks.

A little bit as expected though..

But also the final "dot on the i" to start scratching the panel using Bruces fathers brilliant method !

I am excited to see where this goes, where the work takes you, Kari.

That use of red over black does create the effect. I personally would be super tempted to paint at 15 psi the Luftwaffe camo on the upper wings and the robin’s egg blue on the lowers to make the conditions the same as when she was painted. It’s basically a dual layer paint job, factory with the field applied one by its captors.

Having written that, I actually feel you are closer to thirty percent coverage and do it your way... if you want to add a lighter color just make the duality between upper Luftwaffe grey and lower Luftwaffe blue as a thin layer to create the effect.

Again, these are just ideas.

The difficulty in many red paints is their lack of opacity. It's hard to get complete and even coverage. I guess you can use this to your advantage and manipulate the base coat to achieve a certain effect, like Bruce is alluding to by painting the original camo underneath the red. However, in order to preserve the surface details of the model, I would prefer to keep the red coat as thin as possible and would use lighter base colors (white and light greys, for example).

That is interesting, John! Perhaps a switch to Tamiya White primer highly thinned out would be just right? I remember seeing a Me 262 primed in white and I thought, ‘There is no way that will work,’ but it did!

It's a problem that I've run into when using primary colors like red, yellow, green and blue. The Tamiya paints are very translucent for these basic colors and it's difficult building up consistent coverage against a dark background. I think I would approach an all-red aircraft using a white base... maybe adding some grey mottling as a pre-shade. Red on black will work... it'll just take a lot of paint.

Thanks Bruce, as a matter of fact, that went through my thoughts in the very beginning of the planning. But then I thought, besides double paint work, also a risk that the German camo would have been so good, that I would have made a U turn regarding the project, in other words make the Fw190 a German one....

Absolutely John, I was very much aware of which road to take while priming with black and using Red as the main color. But I took the difficult road and "pay" the consequences with a lot of work + lot of paint. Nevertheless, I truly hope the end result will be good and will pay back!

And might be if I would have used some Tamiya or Guenze paints, the need of paint would have been less.
But, I am using extensively Mr Paints, which are pre-thinned and besides very much thinned.
