Simply incredible - finding the photo of the same aircraft and finding a comparison between silver dope and RLM 65!

How would you create the silver dope effect? You mentioned two Humbrol colors... is that what you would yourself choose???

I must say, I have no idea what those colors exactly look like. And I am not either 100% comfortable to "trust" that is the correct ones, so...
At this moment of time, I am not really sure.
Wonder if Stuart o Carlos have Humbrol 166 in their paintrack and can tell how it looks like in "reality" ?

One note on terms, specifically dope. Dope is not merely a paint or lacquer, but also a sealent of sorts applied to aircraft skin fabrics. Dope is applied to aircraft fabric skin only, not metallic surfaces. Dope tightens up the fabric, gives the fabric rigidity and makes the fabric weatherproof. It can be clear, or pigmented. But it is not needed for metallic or wooden surfaces. In those cases, lacquers or paints are used. If you look at photos of some aircraft, you will sometimes see that fabric control surfaces fade or weather differently than the adjacent metal areas. This is due to different properties in the doped fabric surfaces, and painted or lacquered metal/wood surfaces. They may use the same pigments, but the carrier in the dope or paint/lacquer reacts to environmental conditions differently.

I agree, Carlos. The first stick and tissue kit which was the first model I built was made with a coating of clear dope. It shrinks and causes the tissues to conform as one solid surface to the airframe. I don’t know why this is being perpetuated as how DN-51 lower surface was painted. My question for you is how would you paint this? I think the color is grey painted over the factory blue.

I suspect that it may be an issue of translation. Both Germany and Britain have paint colors that are called silver gray. Yet neither is a metallic color. Instead both are very light grays. As does Finland, according to IPMS Stockholm.

I found my tin of Humbrol 166. It is quite a bit lighter than what is shown on the Humbrol website and just the slightest tinge of green, similar to what is shown on the color chips that Bruce posted. With scale effect it would likely work well as is straight from the tin.
