I’m liking Black Basing so far. I can make it look as used or as new as I’d like. It just takes a whole lot of patience. I’m happy with the look of the cowl, so I’ll leave it at that insofar as the yellow is concerned.

Still to do:

Brush the gun barrels dark iron

Wash the areas where the gun barrels are just a bit with black pigment

Hit the exhaust stacks with that rust colored Tamiya weathering pigment

I’ll be starting the camo on the fuselage and wings next.

Bruce, for the cowl closed configuration, Eduard supplies the two barrels joined together in the shape of a staple. You glue them into the cowl. Now, I suppose what I could’ve done is left the cowl off and painted it separately, painted the gun barrels separately, then installed them, and then installed the cowl during the finishing touches stage,just like I’m doing with the rudder.

I’m actually kind of kicking myself for not doing that...

Nosir, I did not mask them. They’re tiny. Instead, I plan to remove any yellow with one of those tiny, pointed, Tamiya cotton buds and a drop of Windex, then brush my dark iron mixture onto then.

You don’t sound anti at all. This stuff is all preference, and that is okay. Truthfully, I tried the flat, even basecoat. I was happy with the results. Now I’m trying the black base, with a random, localized, haphazard series of very light coats, followed by a few blend coats. And I like this result so far, and I like it better than doing it all even. It’s quickly becoming my personal preference. But you know, with all things, other people’s mileage may vary and there’s plenty of other guys out there who do way better work than me and use all different kinds of methods.

Also, I have a question, if you fellas wouldn’t mind. It concerns the paint color for the fuselage sides. See below:



We’ve got RLM 71 for the dark green in the splinter camo on the wings, the top of the fuselage, and the mottling on the fuselage sides

We’ve got RLM 02 for the gray in the splinter camo on the wings, and the top of the fuselage

And we have RLM 65 on the underside.

Here’s my question-

Do I spray RLM 65 on the fuselage sides, or so I spray RLM 02? The instructions are unclear on that. Does that RLM 65 blue come up from the underside, and the mottling goes on top of it? Or, donInspray the sides with RLM 02 and put the mottling on top of that instead?

Been racking my brain on this one. Any advice is much appreciated.

Kenny by the looks the 65 should come up to the canopy. Then the 02 was very heavy mottling over that

I do this all the time. My favorite is to read the instructions and still have no idea what I am being asked to do, which is why I follow construction builds here.

I would paint the initial 65 fuselage demarcation about the same level as Von Werra’s aircraft in the instructions and then mottle down the sides to “fill in” the blue. Not telling you to how to suck eggs (hopefully) the high demarcation was prevalent when the Axis had air superiority in the early war. As time progressed, they lowered the sides of the upper camouflage and eventually broke it up completely during BOB and after. The first three options in this kit show the high demarcation examples with additional mottle.

Always good to see Galland’s aircraft on the bench!
