I shot another nice coat of Tamiya flat clear at the engine and firewall this morning. The flat clear reduced the weathering effects I did with the orange and red-brown pastel dust on the old Jumo 211 V12, and I rather like it. It’s nicely faded now. Perhaps “Weathered And Well-Worn But Doesn’t Look Like I Found It In A Junkyard.” See here:



Interestingly, the flat clear did nothing whatsoever to tame the black pastel dust which I brushed into the firewall’s various and sundry nooks and crannies:



I’m happy with how these both have turned out.

I also shot some gloss clear at the mounts. Once that’s dry I’ll give them a nice wash. Then a flat coat. Then some dust, and another flat coat. After that I’ll assemble them all together, and that’ll complete Step #1!

Finished up the weathering on the Jumo with a wash in select areas of the engine, plumbing, and mounting arms. Then assembled it all onto the firewall. I glued the mounting arms to the engine first and then, very carefully, mated the attembly to the firewall. The slots where the nubs on the arms fit in are open in the back, so once they were in there I put the Extra Thin on the back where the slots were, flying them in that way. Then left it all alone for a bit before taking photos. Should hold just fine.

It’s a tricky balance. Real “ticklish business” as Ishmael would put it. I’m really glad for the way the flat clear toned-down that reddish-brown X orange pigment.

I’m leaving off the trapeze until later. That’s a part that’ll break during test-fitting and sanding for sure LOL, starting on Step #2 tonight after I put my babies to bed.
