How do you like those True Color paints? A local Railroad Hobby shop carries them and I am curious as to how they work.

Thanks so much for looking, Carlos! Nine more to go of this size!! I’ll try to break this section of the project in half and do four next.

Tru-Color Paints

I see a lot of potential here for us both, Carlos. This paint sample was probably fifteen years old, stored in a tackle box. It opened easily—my main gripe with Testors enamel is how the caps will seal to the bottles. As a mini-review: this is a beautiful paint, easy to brush on, with a drying time which permits easy brush corrections, does not clog the brush; I did not find the smell particularly strong, maybe because I have fans blowing everywhere! I’d like to explore more! The photo sample of Olive Drab on their website looks tasty.



“Nearly all of the U.S. Army colors for armor will be released by early 2018 (many are already in stock at distributors and hobby shops). All of U.S. Army soft skins, APC’s, Uniforms and armament colors, plus U.S. Marine Corps colors will be released by the end of 2018. Israeli AVF’s and uniform colors from 1948 to modern times) will be released by the end of 2018. German WWII colors will be the next area in development for all AFV’s, Artillery and Figures. This will be followed by British WWII colors for the same model types.


All of the paints in the TCP-1400 to TCP-1599 series are designed to air brushed directly from the bottle with little or no thinning at 28-35 PSI. If thinning is wanted, we recommend that the modeler use TCP-015, Thinner, or TCP-310, Retarder, as they will not affect the intended finish or drying time of the paint. The finish will be what the color chip or experts determines to be correct.”

Based upon your recommendation I will try them Bruce. I have an upcoming project where I can use at least one of their colors that is likely in their railroad colors line.

Go for it, Carlos! I am seeing cockpit colors here as well!! Please let me know what you decide! I don’t think my Pops would ever give a fellow modeler a bum steer. I forgot I had these bottles on hand until a couple of days ago when I realized I would need to learn how to paint a batch series of rubber on multiple drive wheels—I was not visualizing a way to do this easily by air brush so this paint was a wonderful surprise.

Bruce, there is actually a most simplistic way to do basic airbrush painting of road wheels.

1st, Black overall,

2nd, use a circle template to mask off the black areas and paint the rest OD it whatever metal color is the non tire portions.

Thank you so much for this wonderful and practical sequence of painting, Carlos! I wish I asked you before I painted all of the wheels in ODG. Well—I have committed myself to painting the rubber last when I should have painted the rubber first... but I am still excited... and I ordered the search light. I think... I will keep the search light on the mantlet but no mantlet cover and I still need your help adapting the search light support to the mantlet.... because I have no reference.

Aside from those 25th ID photos, I have not come across any other US M41s with that searchlight. But of course a tough search makes me look harder....

And truth be told, I’ve never used the circle template method, I usually base paint the road wheel by airbrush and then do the tire with a good old fashioned hairy stick...

I’m looking forward to the searchlight very much! This will be a great addition. Since the resin kit includes the base components, hopefully these parts will adapt to fit the Bulldog’s mantlet. Ah-woo! It will be so good to get these wheels painted.
