This one is #5, the first one was many years ago.

Checked this morning on how secure and rigid the attachment was of the new cowl, all good!

Now I lost the molded in panel line but I do have a definitive panel variation in a good way but most important is the bad (shame on me) step is gone!


Here you can see the start of the leveling out of the seam. If you look you can see the two support styrene rods I added just for more support, there is two more on the other side in the same spots.



You will also see that the radiator cowls on the wings have not been installed yet, NORMALLY they would be on long before installing the wing to the fuselage but that is because the Quickboost cowls are arriving today and will show you the difference between them and the kit part, and see are they worth the purchase. That will be coming up next!

The Quickboost radiator cowls arrived and boy they are a gem! Thanks to Thomas for suggesting these to me. These are roughly $5 USD for the set, the shape is excellent, it has a thin mounting and sits pretty darn flush with the wings (looks it to me anyway) perfect fit! The only cutting and sanding you have to do is getting it off of it’s tree, once that part is done, you couldn’t ask for a better fit.


Note: the small gap you see is because I did not fully slide the part forward while dry fitting.

Compared to the kit radiator cowls the Quickboost part is by a long shot better. Worth the $5 spent? Hell yeah it is! Can you fix the kit part to be more like this? Yes BUT you are in for A LOT of trimming and sanding, figure an hour per side! Yeah I am gonna eat my words and vote goes toward using the Quickboost parts instead, it is a direct drop fit replacement.


Yup, I say this is a must for the Emil!

Just a quick (and better photo than last time) pic of the rudder control rods I made from .010 brass wire. Fits perfectly into the molded depression and is very sturdy. After glue is set just trim the excess length and super glue the end of the wire to the rudder attachment! Wha-la, a better looking piece than the PE parts.

Yep th $5 is worth it to me to go with the quickboost, thanks for the comparison.

Oh yeah... I can see a huge difference. As Clint said, it’s worth the $5. Gotta remember that tidbit...

Well on to my dilemma since I have about 4 days til colors will start going down and trying to plan this part out. With the kit radiator covers being made of styrene it was a quick install of my home made cover struts... But new covers are resin so it will either be the PE parts if they will fit properly or pre- sanded styrene rods installed. I did a test run of the styrene but to get the right visual thickness it is too flimsy, and PE I am good with when it hides the super glue, the PE struts have always been a thorn in my side. Oh well we will see what I do I guess.

BUT I did finish up the lower engine cowl and it is good enough to accept the engine radiator assembly and exhaust. Sanding went good, rivet detail went great, dry fitted the upper cowl to make sure it was going to sit correctly, went to install the access cover PE part (comes with the Eduard Detail Set for the E-3/4) and as I picked it up, it dropped, on the floor, in the garage, and spent an hour looking for the part. Found it and didn’t waste any more time putting it on.

This will be the last time you see this as a Frankenstein!

Two updates as the days countdown til paint day. I decided on the PE parts for the struts since if I have to use super glue I might as well use the PE (upmost respect for you guys who deal with this all the time!). I would much prefer a styrene part but we gotta use what we got.

Anyway the diagram in the instructions do not illustrate the PE part very well and good luck finding a close up online of this part. The picture doesn’t show it very well, actually at all but maybe you will get the idea. There will be a side to the PE part that is more angled and flat, that goes on the wing, other side on the cowl.

Also now is a good time to finally install the radiator assembly for the lower engine cowl, said it before doing it this way has the best fit hands down. Note: the styrene rods are only for support for me swapping in the new cowl.
