Eddie is awesome ... and I’ve been listening to a lot of Iron Maiden lately, along with Dokken, Venom, and a whole lot of other 80’s hard rock and metal. Especially thrash- there’s also D.R.I. and Overkill and a lot of Exodus on my go-to playlist these days. But Bruce Dickinson & Co. will always be my favorite.

I know what you mean by 2020 sucking - I've been there too man.

I'm itching to get that one started but I'm holding off in part to build enthusiasm but also because I haven't done a camouflage job like that before and I figure, if I can pull off the mottled field-applied camo over the old splinter scheme for my Emil, then a Spitfire camo job won't seem as daunting.

Ah you'll have no problem with the RAF camo, it's easy. if you're spraying it (which I assume you are) you should be able to get some masks, but it can be done free hand. What kit do you have/want and what Mk are you going to build?

To your question—

The Spitfire I’ve got is Eduard’s Mk. IXe, and I plan on doing Maj. Cecil Golding’s aircraft:





I like that color/camo scheme on that aircraft quite a lot. Though I do find the idea of executing it rather intimidating And you are correct, I’ll be spraying it, I was planning on using silly putty to cordon off the sections but if there’s masks available I’ll probably end up buying them. I’ll be on the lookout.

Now, there is also another thing you could probably give me some guidance on. In the instructions this bird has the full wings, which I like. But every model I’ve ever seen, his plane had the clipped wings. I don’t like that look at all. So which is correct? I don’t want to do that marking option if the wings were clipped. That’s where I’m at mentally with that one. Oh, and my resin exhaust stacks and wheels are on the way!

You should be okay with the full wings - mk IX's were equipped with either. So depending on the particular airframe you want to do (and the image you showed has full span) you'll be okay.

KENNY!!!!! Glad to have you back brother!! I feel you with this year. Being in healthcare has sucked something bad! I've been forcing myself to the bench whenever I have a day off (if I'm not exhausted). I too listen to the same music plus a lot of newer metal, progressive rock and such. I feel music helps me a LOT!!

Can't wait to see more of your builds too!

Stuart- THANK YOU! Much appreciated. You know how I am, I get fixated on certain things and want them to be just-so. And for the Spitfire project, we can’t clip Baby’s wings ... I really like that marking option. I’ve seen many with the black and white stripes floating around. And that looks hella-cool. But I like the aesthetics of the camouflage. So doing Maj. Golding’s was right up my alley.

I can’t even imagine. I have several friends who are first responders and their lives have been a living hell for the most part. I could not do that job. I’d lose what’s left of my grip.

Okie dokie SO- today I felt like calling out some of the details in Pips’ cockpit, and after I did that I laid a wash down in there. For the wash I used Mig’s “Neutral Brown.” The other brown I have is “Dark Red Brown” but I was disinclined to use that one, fearing that the red in the wash’s pigment would “vibrate” with the slight green I see in the RLM-02. That is only my speculation. There might not actually be green in the gray half of that paint but my eyes perceive it. Then again, my eyes ain’t what they used to be. Anyhow, I like how that “Neutral Brown” looks. So I gave it a wash, installed the stick, called out some small details here and there and did some more dry brushing, and that’ll about wrap it up. I’m happy with how this looks and am disinclined to paint any more in here. If I do anything else it’ll be to add just a bit of pigments around where the pilot’s feet would be. I’m hanging it up for the day, I’ll sleep on that and see how I feel about the idea tomorrow. Meanwhile here’s some shots:

Great looking pit Kenny! Nothing like a wash to really bring out the details. I never knew about that Iron Maiden kit I'm going to have to pick one up too now. If you want to listen to something that is way out of the norm check out Heilung on youtube watch lifa the live concert. You will either love them or hate them.

I’m sad to report though that I ran into several fit issues with that resin set, which I could not resolve to my satisfaction. I’m not sweating that too much, it was my first crack at a resin cockpit set, and I learned a lot about working with resin, modifying kit parts, and so forth and that’ll help me *greatly* when it comes time to do my 1:72 Spitfire’s resin cockpit.

Don’t worry about Pips’ Emil though! I had a barely started E-3 on my shelf from, gosh I don’t even remember -I think I was gonna do Horst Tietzen’s aircraft?- so I pulled that down, wired up the cockpit a little bit, added the little pull switch guys using spare IP detail parts from the resin kit’s PE fret, and copped the resin seat and hardware from the completed resin set, built it up, masked it off, painted what needed painting and Bob’s yer’ uncle I’m back in business!



Is it a nice-looking as richly detailed as the resin set? No it is not. But I’m happy with it. I like the little wiring work I did, I think the seat looks nice in there, and at least I was able to re-create the paint effect.

I’m glad I didn’t shelve this project, or smash everything with the hammer. Guys, dare I say it- I think I’m maturing!

Looks darn good Kenny, I've had mixed results with fit using resin replacements in the past. Now I like to do what you did here, a resin seat maybe a new control stick and what I can find in my spares bin to spruce things up a bit along with adding wire.
Keep it up I want to see more of this Emil.
