ROTJ ILM-BUILT 1/43 MPC REFERENCE

Brothers, feast your eyes on these images. A real beauty. Biggest takeaway would be the custom canopy. Looks like that was scratch built from plastic card. They wouldn’t want the reflections from the clear styrene surfaces revealing the studio lights and acting all weird during photography; but I think for the sake of verisimilitude I ought to try building a canopy like that. The ILM Studio Scale (1/24) versions were either open framed without plastic gels or color gelled to hide the pilot and create a bit of mystery. There is a well known Red 5 photo that shows just how raggedy this could look after filming under lights.

Excellent reference photos Bruce!!!

For the white base color, I would suggest mixing in a little light gray into the white for the base color to get a more dingy off-white appearance. That’s what I did on my little Bandai 1/144 Red Leader build

Hello Fellow SPAMmers!

Golly, I know it has been awhile. I've been unemployed for 2 months and I have been focused on finding a job. I have been thinking about taking my anxiety and building a project I know how to build and a project that allows me to complete my Group Build for SPAM's Big 10 years as a forum. Essentially I am reposting my beginning reference for Pyro Red 10 which is essentially all that exits because well—pyro, right? They blew this model up. So there's a side view and there is a work in progress top view and not much else. I am thinking that I will draw this first and add color in photoshop to sort of figure out what is the most likely ILM paint job interpretation based on these very slim reference images. Not sure what is actually on the other side but there are some very big differences from this X-Wing and the more commonly modeled versions.

This is my favorite Rebel spacecraft, designed by Ralph McQuarrie and Joe Johnston. A completely different design language. Such strong characteristics. There is something so very different about the designs—very iconic. This was designed in 1974-75 and influenced by design ideas of the 40s and 50s. Definitely WWII is a huge influence. Beautifully ugly design! Powerful. Professional. These ships are purely designed to be functional. This is a tool to use in war, their job is to do something. You can shoot this thing up and nothing will happen to it. Dented, dirtied up, these are still pretty sturdy. They aren't fragile.

Check out the yellow nose, fuselage sides and that heavy grey/blue stripe from the nose back to the canopy! The four engines are a prominent design feature and each X-Wing in the squadron has its own unique coloration. In this case, one of the outboard laser canon assemblies is painted red and the outboard plates covering the engines themselves are darker greys. There is a lot of overspill. A lot of primer!

Good to see you back Bruce!

It's certainly a very iconic design the X-wing. It'll be good to see one that's a little bit different.

Absolutely! I think Red 10 shares some color similarities in its colors to Red 4. I think I have a photo of them together in the spray booth.

This is mainly an exterior color reference for what I’m thinking about doing for the exterior of the ANH X-Wing which is to my mind grey primer as a base coat followed by light grey as a color coat then abraded and added color panels and primer patches on top of unit markings. I also have to figure out a decent red for unit markings. I’ll paint those rather than use decals.
