Ok, that's new to me. I thought the box provided at least one A-0 scheme.
By the way: The instructions are mentioning the A-0 which the box art doesn't. Maybe they found out on that?


After I did some more research on the subject l'm starting to doubt on my own statement that this is an A-0. Though an early A-1 with still no cooling vents added, it clarly shows the suction duct cover that was introduced with the A-1 series. I cut out two drawings from 'Jagdflugzeug Fw 190 A Fw 190 "Dora" Ta 152 H', Peter Rodeike 1998 and put them side by side. The A-0 had a tear drop shaped cover, while on the A-1 the shape of the later versions is visible. The kit provides both parts as I can tell from a look on the sprues.


Another nice detail this book reveals about Black 13 is the subsequently added foot hole for the pilot to facilitate cockpit entrance. Therefore the fuselage had to be reinforced in that area with a row of additional rivets. The book shows a great photo of it (page 45, upper picture. You have to zoom in to discover three pairs of rivet heads). Bruce, I'm proud to tell you again: It's in the box!

Torben! I am glad I did not add the A-0 duct on both sides. Thank you so much for the save! I was thinking I would do the two vertical rolls of rivets first, actually! Whew! Dodged a bullet!

I am going to treat the aircraft as an A-1 based on what you discovered. The werk number is “100,” I believe—so perhaps this was literally the last of the first block series of A-1 versions.

Torben, I was just going by what the box cover said. My knowledge of what constitutes the difference between an A-0 and A-1 is based on what the rest of you have been posting here. So I bow to the better authorities. According to the pics of Black 13, it appears that this machine is an A-1 without the cooling vents behind the exhausts?

Bruce... did you add the tear drop bulge to one of the cowling covers already? I hope you used Tamiya Extra Thin instead of Mr Cement S!

Is that a coat of RLM 66 on your cockpit parts? If so, congrats on making a big step! You are ready to chop trees down!

Your earlier question about enamels over acrylics. I personally avoid mixing paint types whenever possible but you should be ok as long as the RLM 66 is fully dry.

Thank you so much, Clint! I missed you these past couple of sessions, bud! Glad you’re back. Those “gills,” Clint. I sweated their removal. Now on one fuselage side I have two pin marks—one on the cowl—which I have hopefully reduced completely! The other pin mark is on the tail. I barely see these until the primer revealed them. Hey—did you ever recover your photos???

Here we have more paint. Humbrol enamel 66 glaze over Gunze lacquer 66 which is my variation on Ken’s weathering with oil base paints. Thank you, sir. Please note: the seat cushion is Gunze 66 for the moment. I have Humbrol’s leather colors picked to use on this area in a much more opaque fashion.
