The true thickness of the paint is visible at last, the abrasions from stepping into the wing areas surrounding the fluid fill covers stand out clearly as well. Your supposition that there would be no need for markings or the reason why there are none of the usual highly visible German fueling “triangles” makes sense—as well as points out that the profile I posted from Valiant Publishing’s airframe series may be incorrect. Certainly the photographic data supports that these markings were overpainted. I also wonder if the small Red Crosses on the fuselage were kept as well, or if all markings were overpainted. I am going to proceed as though all markings were removed when the factory finishes were oversprayed with FAF colors. This brings up an intriguing weathering perspective that RLM colors would “peep through” abrasions. It is possible to see this effect mainly in the second photo from the last batch you added. I know model builders have captured the effects of multiple layers showing through in weathering situations and wonder if a very thin German camo painted first will do anything for the final finish. My instinct is no, but I would like your thoughts if possible?
Glad if you liked the pics!
Can you imagine, I cannot find any reference pictures / drawings of the red cross on the fuselage..... Where precisely is it located?
& I am not really sure either, if I would paint first a thin german Camo underneath.. And I cannot really see in any pictures I have, even a weak balkenkreuz "shining" through... So njaeh...

Hi Kari, I think the profiles in the Valiant Book are dubious for Finnish aircraft. I meant the Red Cross locator for the First Aid Kit!

What the hell is going on in here? Left you guys alone in this dark, small scale, super old kit corner of the forum and before someone can yell out "flying pencil", twentyseven pages of madness happened.
I mean it's cool. Very cool. But still madness, gentleman. Be aware of that!

Thanks Bruce,
I will start double checking...

Confirmed!
The red cross symbol is also on the FAF Dorniers! Visible in all pictures that shows that side of the fuselage...
I guess good thing not paint over, so rescuers, either enemy or civil persons see in which hatch those bandages and other stuff is...
BUT, white part of the red cross symbol is circular, not squarish as the Valiant book tells...

Hi Torben, Kari’s contribution is significant enough to warrant an IPMS article—especially considering what is in the Valiant book, which to be fair is more a survey of the airframe, and less about the specific countries whose forces used it. The depth of research and the data here is indispensable to anyone seriously building a FAF Do 17. As for my contribution, all I am able to offer anyone is building a fairly tricky old kit. The challenge here is what is known, most of it highly specific, and making it interesting enough to follow. That part is on me, my friend!

Kari, thank you so much! Sincerely. I was starting to regret buying the book. Your knowledge and resource material is absolutely fantastic and I remain deeply indebted to you!

Thank you for your kind words, but the fact is, I knew hardly anything of the Dornier Do-17 before you started with the Frog kit and especially changing it to DN-51.. so during this relative short but intensive time I have learned a lot! And that is a fact and the thank you goes to you my friend!

Kari, ditto—for me, it is a very great privilege to have access to your knowledge of language, the geography and your formidable talents as a model builder. I started debating whether I should “floss,” or sand off the raised hatch bumps on the kit and scribe hatches. There is something about having the cowling be a smooth shape, in addition to being more accurate. There is just a certain something that looks better.
