That texture on the wood there is wicked cool. I wish I could pull that off with paint, oh man!

Slumming along on the Se-5. The basic construction is done, fit is not so bad. Drilled the holes for rigging before I glued the flying surfaces on. The interplane struts are glued to the lower wing and the cabane struts to the upper previously so they were good and solid. The first two pictures show a trial assembly, the cabane struts have been snapped into their respective holes in the fuselage, and it looks like things are lining up pretty good. I painted the lower surfaces with Humbrol Clear Doped Linen, that's got to be the right color, Brit paint on a Brit airplane? I did the wings in two light passes, on the first I had placed .7mm masking tape in the rib locations, which were not indicated on the plastic so I used the upper ribs for reference to place the tape. The second pass was with very thin paint, spraying until I had a reasonable effect.

John Eaton, you are not slumming, sir. Your painting is exquisite, and you have lifted Aurora’s old tooling to new heights without resorting to any aftermarket shenanigans such as I am employing. You build with integrity and fidelity to the source.

Wing fitting and playing with color balance warms and cools with my VSCO filters. It was a very busy day and modelbuilding time was limited. I reshaped the connection from center form to each wing, and adjusted the layers of paint somewhat that will be the base for the camouflage.



The wing piece does not fit tightly at all. It friction fits on the edges but the seams are wide open and no attempt is made to reduce them. Shadows, perhaps? I still feel I could last minute add two precut and painted pieces of card to hide the join on either side, and I may examine that idea.



Flipping the aircraft over you see the shaping work I am doing more clearly. All of this will eventually be turquoise blue.



This angle shows how small the aircraft is.



Last but certainly not least, here is my adjusted Aurora cowling painted with Tamiya Semigloss Black which I feel will need to be glossed up with UV Gloss Clear to make it even more... glossy.
