Some more progress photos from the past few days. The only AM I am using on this ok are decals. I used a Pro Modeler set for the 109 to provide me with a decal for the IP. It came out ok, at least for under a closed canopy.





from the same sheet I used a harness decal. I always thought those were too thin, lacking any thickness when applied onto kit seats, so I tried something new here. I applied the harness decal onto some tissue paper to give it a little more substance, then I trimmed off the rest of the tissue. Better but still not truly to scale. Next time I'm gonna try some paper or tape. I've tried foil but the decals did not adhere to foil at all.





and lastly, I applied a pin wash around the detail painting in the sidewalls and cleaned that up





I'll have the interior ready to close up in a few more sessions.

I've just read the whole thread from the start Stik - Really nice work on that cockpit, I like that idea for the
promodeler decal seatbelts - it looks a lot better than a plain decal or just tape belts. I have a few of those and I'll try it the next I use them.

Funny that I check in here after a while (I'm on vacation) to find you working on a 70's vintage Airfix kit, I've just purchased the old tooling Airfix 1/48 Hurricane mk.I in a similar vintage boxing - I'll post it up when I get back home as I plan on building it when I get back. It'll be interesting to see how it compares to your 109F.

promodeler decal seatbelts - it looks a lot better than a plain decal or just tape belts. I have a few of those and I'll try it the next I use them.

I'm glad you like this project Stuart. Thanks for looking in! I built that old Airfix Hurricane several years ago. It's a nice build, but needs a little help at the wings to fuselage join to give it some dihedral. Otherwise it has zero. Unfortunately mine was destroyed in an accident years ago while moving. I want to build another one day. And of course the new tooled one they released more recently. I love both the old and new 1/48 Airfix kits. And I highly recommend trying the Promodeler seat harness decals onto masking tape or paper. Either one should give a proper scale effect. I'm looking forward to your Hurricane.

What is cool is to watch the way keeping the integrity of the kit cockpit without the bells n whistles of aftermarket resin (hullo everything I seem to tackle). The kit comes to life in stages—as its designers intended. You are a hell of a painter, Stik. Truly, truly, truly. Ditto builder. I appreciate the way you make your choices, too.

Thank you Bruce. I think I have the most fun when I do just like this one. Some improvement to the basic kit that I can dream up and do with what I have on hand, but still keeping it close to what was in the box. I really think that the old school IPMS Out Of Box category is the most challenging to do with older kits. Mind you, that allows literally for just what came in the box and nothing more. One can modify kit parts by thinning, hollowing out, shaping, etc. But no AM or scratch additions are allowed. One can use the sprues themselves for add ons such as antenna wire, or the instruction sheet paper to make a seat harness, but that is about the extent. I am not quite going that route here, but...

Thanks Stik - alas it's our last full day today, we're off home tomorrow.

I can really recommend the new tooled bf109E that came out a few years back, that was a brilliantly fun kit to build - But I agree they've made some cracking good kits over the years. I'm still finding my feet in quarter scale, but I'm really looking forward to building the Hurricane.
