After the black base (mr surfaced 1500) I did the brown (Tamiya thinned with gunze). I don't exactly know why but it did not go well. I wasn't able to get the level of control I wanted. The paint dried on the tip of my airbrush either clogging it or forcing me to open up the AirPod resulting in to much paint.
As a result the brown blotches have to little shape. I can correct this with the sand colour. But I am also not happy with the saturation. When I use the black base methods I try to build up layers of colour. But I could not get they level of control (which I previously had with my Helix or MiG-3 models)
So after a dissatisfing paint session I stripped my airbrush and put all the parts in the sonic cleaner. Maybe that helps?

I wish I could help by offering ideas, but I do send my best wishes... for what these are worth. I would guess that the air brush paint delivery was the culprit. Although I wonder if the mix was too thick?

I suspect part of the problem is thinning the Tamiya paint with Gunze thinner. Most acrylics do not work as well with other brands of thinner.

Until now I have had very good results with the Tamiya/Gunze combination. So maybe the mix was just to thick. The sand is Humbrol enamel. So that is completely different.

I must say, in the pic does not look bad, then again I don't have a reference picture in front of me knowing should it be darker or lighter or what.
I have also mixed Tamiya with Gunze and vice versa, without any hassle, what I can recall.
Borg: Haven't tested yet Mr Paint colours, no hassle with thinning, very waterish but works like a dream! Aviation Megastore seems to sell them also...

I do have Gunze MR paint Aquaous. But I have to much paint already. First I have clear some more out from my stash.

Just tried the sand colour. And again I failed to use the airbrush as I did in the past. The whole thing is botched. Maybe this is going to be the first build that ends in the trash.
I don't know why but I cannot get my airbrush to do fine lines. But it/m did that in the past. I haven't got a clue what is going wrong.
For some reason I either get no paint or a puddle of paint. I cannot seem to get a smooth and stable line. I have no clue why.

Borg,
First—sending you good vibes from California! You will get through this, and I don’t feel any model will be harmed by this process. Adding too much paint is definitely something that I have done, so I would suggest long before the paint cures to attempt a strategic “lifting” of any layers done today that you feel are not acceptable. I would always defer to your level of experience and knowledge of methods, but when I screw up I usually choose a test spot and try whatever remover suits the paint. I read through your thread again and see no mention of surface preparation, I know you did prepare the surface but what I feel is happening is a paint mixture reaction. Is the batch of thinner a possible suspect?
