Mustang! My second twelve hour day officially ended; I’m reading your words in a great coffee shop because I really wanted a cheeseburger and I did not want to cook it or eat fast food! I wanted a real meal; and that is where the mom n pop places like this one just rule! There are just four of us—a couple playing cards, a small boy whose favorite football team is the Miami Dolphins and I assume his mom... the waitress is “grilling” this kid about his likes and dislikes...! And my food is here!!

FORD GT 40 Mk I ROAD CAR SPECIFICATION

EUREKA.

This kit is based upon one of the Mk I Road Car versions made by Ford A V in England. Prior to shipping, on the 21st December 1966 a set of photographs were taken in the FAV Works showing a group of road cars which were shortly to be delivered to Dearborn. The images can be found in the car’s history file, and clearly show chassis P/1059 in its gorgeous Opalescent Maroon with black leather interior. The Production Car Record Sheet notes that the car left Slough on the 23rd December 1966 and was finished in Road Car Specification and fitted with the desirable 289 High Performance engine, number SGT/20, fitted with Weber carburettors and ZF transmission number 213.

Now the hunt for opalescent maroon begins... MR COLOR METALLIC RED 75???

Apologies in advance—I know this not an easy road and I have gone back and forth on this road a few times already. My initial instinct to paint this Azure blue based on a "Street car" version was closest to being accurate to the kit design of a Mk I GT 40.

Important to note—this maroon car was selected to be one of 19 to participate in the GT40 MK1 Promotion program in a letter dated 16th February 1967. It is unclear what exactly was involved, but chassis P/1059 was one of six cars allocated to Shelby America for a promotional programme through their six field units, the others being 1057, 1064, 1068, 1069 and 1070. It is believed that at this point the cars livery was changed to be white with Ford racing blue stripes to assist with the promotional campaign.

This is what is featured on the box art for the kit. The promotional campaign version, but it is a road version and it IS this chassis. Now we have the number:

Feels like these have a nuance that you just don's see any longer ?
Or then it's the shape of the Ford that sort of bluff you to believe so ?

Hello, Kari!! Thank you so much for your reply! It is June 1! Summer will be here before we know, or perhaps we will know, interesting expression: “before we know it...”

I agree with you that the color, paint, application and composition are all wonderful, reflecting not simply the light but the great care in choosing what covers the metal skin... I do feel the thought involved was not ahem “colored by computer,” which means adjusted to a screen monitor. These colors are the end result of an analogue process; in other words, hand-built. That floor shot shows the extraordinary attention to detail as well as this benchmade processing—each car is unique... no “cookie cutters” involved—what my Dad said when I bought my first Honda: “Not bad for a cookie cutter car.”

I started cleaning and polishing fifty years of storage off the white plastic. Prep for primer is going to take me awhile... any suggestions on clean up?
