Thanks for the responses - Yes Tom I'm going to do the spotted scheme.

I've been doing a LOT of research on this scheme, and although it's a digital image, I think this best shows how it should look in my minds eye.



I have the decals now, but the placement/painting guide is crap - it only gives a one side view of the aircraft and the colours on it are wrong, so as I said I've had to do my own research, and it's a bit of a mess.



Using Dana Bell's guide below as a reference, the colours should be a base coat of (all FS) 30227 Tan, with 34092 Dark Green, 34102 Olive Green and 30118 Brown spots. (this is matched by the decal pack colour call outs)

However, I'm going to dispute Dana's notes. He calls up the base colour of FS30227 Tan, BUT, this is 30227...



And to my mind, that's far too dark brown. This is what it's supposed to be, and no matter what the colour issues of screens, photography etc. etc. that's not the FS30227 shown above, it's much lighter. Unless there's been a change to the FS colours, or there's two FS colours with the same number or I'm just not reading something right (or thick), what he's called up is wrong.





Oddly enough, I think Airfix back in the 1980's got it closer - look at the base colour in the box art.



The equivalent modern Humbrol paint is #83 Orchre - not 100%, maybe a bit too dark, but after about three hours of comparing paint charts this evening it's close enough for me.



I'm going to go with a base coat of Humbrol #83 Ochre, with spots of #149 Dark Green, #117 US Light Green and #118 US Tan. Once I get the paints I'll do a few swatches anyway, as I want to work out how best to paint this. I'll not be using an airbrush but if I can work out how to do Luftwaffe mottling (with a q-tip) I'm sure I can do this - the upshot of practicing being I can what my colour combination looks like before I put it on the model.

to be honest looking at further references I'm not even sure if that's correct - it might be more of a hemp colour.

I think I may just have to get a selection of paints, make up some samples and see what works best.

I'd do the base color Desert Sand. Try looking in scalemates for other kit brands of the scheme. I came across one Sand for base color. Other color call outs for the spots are as designated in this Design models kit instruction guide:

H142 Field Drab
H149 Dark Green
H187 Sand

IMO, I think that's pretty fair for color call outs.

I enjoy researching colors because im kinda anal with kit instruction guide paint call out depending on the subject.

I have a tendency to compare FS colors between paint brands. Each brand paint is different shade-wise. I make my final decisions on what looks better or close enough to the real thing.

Sometimes I will look into RLM colors if they cross reference to the FS number.

I use scalemates a lot too Tom, and I agree it's a great tool for research - looking at other instructions is a great tool. Alas I'd already looked at that same kit and found the Humbrol #187 Sand ref - but Humbrol have changed the name of 187 to Dark Stone.



To be honest I'm just going to mark one eyeball it like I have a few other builds and see what I like the best.

Doh.... I thought they were Gunze colors.
