WHAT!?!? You've never had Heinz Baked Beans? What's bloody wrong with you people! no wonder you drink that awful coffee stuff, drive on the wrong side of the road and can't spell armour. Don't worry, I shall educate you!

They're in a tomato sauce Lyle - quite nice, not like Boston beans or spicy beans. As I said, good on a buttered baked potato with or without cheese.

As for the Marmite - it is I grant you rather strong, so you really only need a small amount. The best way to eat it is on toast... you do have toast in the US right? That's heated bread? Spread a bit of butter on the toast, and then a thin spread of the Marmite. Love the stuff, although you might well hate it. It's also good for adding to stocks in cooking (1/2 a tsp per pint).

I dont buy Heinz Baked Beans. I buy the good stuff....

To be honest, I don't often eat them either. They're pretty much a staple part of the full English breakfast or in a potato as I said - neither of which I eat that often.

Spaghetti with Marmite by Nigella Lawson



INGREDIENTS
Serves: 4-6

12 ounces spaghetti
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 teaspoon Marmite or Vegemite (or more to taste)
freshly grated Parmesan cheese (to serve) - see Additional Information below

METHOD

Cook the spaghetti in plenty of boiling salted water, according to the packet instructions.

When the pasta is almost cooked, melt the butter in a small saucepan and add the Marmite/Vegemite and 1 tablespoon of the pasta water, mixing thoroughly to dissolve.

Reserve ½ cup of pasta water; then drain the pasta and pour the Marmite/Vegemite mixture over the drained spaghetti, adding a little reserved pasta water to amalgamate if required.

Serve with plenty of grated Parmesan cheese.

Heinz in Pittsburgh started this as a way to sell their products overseas. So it’s really a U.S. marketing campaign of a U.S. product and big bucks are involved.

“With less smoky flavor and thinner consistency, the beans were more suited to a British palette and an American. Heinz beans were initially exported to the U.K. as a luxury item in 1886 and sold at the high-end department store Fortnum & Mason. But the popularity of the product grew so rapidly that, by 1905, a factory opened in the UK to meet the growing demand and make the product more economically accessible.

As for the iconic move of pouring them on top of toast? Heinz claims credit for this, too. While their beans became part of the full English breakfast in 1967 with the ad campaign "Beanz Meanz Heinz" (per Creative Review), an executive at the brand created the dish in 1972 to make the product a mealtime staple all day long.”
