My rule for putty, after learning the hard way, is to use only when the gap or hole is stable. It should not be used as a bridge between two unattached parts. A shim or strip of plastic will bridge the gap AND provide a solid attachment surface. If you're lucky, the Milliput would work but most likely, the repair would develop cracks and then you are screwed because it becomes almost impossible to create a feasible bond there.

I absolutely agree with you, John. There is a lot of potential flexing with the fuselage halves. I was thinking about this as well. You’re totally absolutely one hundred percent right.

Inspired by Johns reply above, (just replied in the Spitfire post), I will go with tailor-made stretched sprue + putty to fill the gap. Should do the trick!

Yes, that fella was not messin’ around. That is some filling badassery and then some. Filling those gaps with sections of card is mighty cool. I do not remember if he wrote what he used as filler—looks a bit like Tamiya White, perhaps?

Rear view mirrors

I started by sketching Eduard resin versions for the P-51D in 1/48, wondering what the deal was: optional equipment? I started to research just a lil’ bit.



Are these really from the Spitfire? Really? So cool.

I know that the Spitfire had two types of mirrors- the round one like in your photo, and a rectangular type very similar to those found on windshields in a car. As far as the Mustang goes, I am not familiar with what their mirrors looked like. I do believe that the B & C types with a Malcolm hood used a round mirror like the Spitfire.
