Those are Vietnamese Air Force A-1's. I was talking the Navy ones in the vid that Stik posted. During the Vietnam War, the US Navy tested an all over OD Green on a select few jets.

Thank you for explaining! I hope I have not offended! I was reading “Red Storm Rising” thinking for the first time I had some idea which aircraft was which... this is usually the moment when I think I should stick to X-Wings, lol!

Dude you never offend me. It takes a lot to offend me (I'm in EMS). We all have our certain subject matters that we're good at (I'm certainly not an expert).

I was reading about that in the A-4 Skyhawk book that I have.
On another note, does anyone know what version of the Sidewinder the F-4J would normally carry? The kit comes with 5 different versions and I have no idea which one is correct.

Depends upon the time frame for Sidewinders. AIM-9B went to war on the Phantom in 1965, and was in use from the time the the F-4 first entered service on both Air Force and Navy Phantoms. Only the F-8 used the radar guided C version. The AIM-9D was introduced by the Navy around 1966 or so. The identical looking (but more capable and reliable) G came along in the early 70s and was used for the Linebacker era. The identical looking H model soldiered on into the 80’s when they were replaced by the “all aspect” L. The E and J were USAF versions and came out in roughly 1967/1972 respectively. Different allied nations used different versions on the Sidewinder on their Phantoms over the years.

Here is a thread on the Sidewinder that I made here a few years ago.
