Ah, “The Thing”... John Carpenter and Kurt Russel at their best... “Escape From New York” and “Big Trouble in Little China” also great, but “The Thing” did everything just right.

Saving Private Ryan? Band of Brothers? I really was into Band of Brothers. That’s a worthy series.

Saving Private Ryan.

Band of Brothers was better done, although they did take a few liberties with the source material. And far few liberties than was done with “The Pacific”. Ryan is one of those movies that can say “inspired by actual events”, but fictionalized those events big time to tell its’ tale. But the Omaha Beach landing sequence is still among one of the most realistic war scenes put on film yet.

Saving Private Ryan had me hooked just after that when Hanks gets orders from his superiors (Dennis Farina amongst them I think?) and the officers are chowing on some of the fattest and juiciest roast beef sandwiches I have ever seen and the brilliance of this was I felt I was on the side of Tom Hanks from that moment forward because he and I were just not interested in eating chopped meat after taking that objective; we had seen humans chopped to bits...

I viewed that scene differently, thru the prism of being a former grunt. He (Hanks) is seeing the rear area HQ types living in comparative luxury, eating sandwiches with hot coffee, while he debriefs the boss on his three day patrol that had no such amenities. A definite disconnect between the combat line troops and the admin folks.

Saving Private Ryan? Band of Brothers? I really was into Band of Brothers. That’s a worthy series.

I like them both very very much, remember I bought the DVD box of BoB, a collectors edition, metal box etc and watched all the episodes after each other, though one / day.

Another of my absolute favorite TV series, going totally in the opposite genre direction, the Sci-fi series "Taken".

These series are probably one of the few I have watched without fast forwarding....
