Decals going on before all painting is complete because... because.... I dunno, I just felt like playing with decals last night.

One problem with the Academy kit that I really hadn't noticed until just now: no swastikas? Digging through the spares, I have a set that LOOK right, but are slightly large (from an Me-410 sheet), and I have extras from an Eduard Bf-110 kit that are about the right size, but have that black outline around the swasitka.

Thinking "slightly larger" is the lesser of two evils right now, unless I find some other extras in the kits I have in my stash.

Looking great Vance! I recently ran into a decal mess with a recent 1/32 Hase 109G-6 kit ,,, I was not impressed with the replacements either after a 4 month wait..... still way too thin, these look nice, not see thru

Ha ha. Yeah, sometimes it's itching so hard, you HAVE to do a certain aspect of our hobby.

It's funny, Hasegawa and Academy both seem to take a lot of heat for decal quality, but I've rarely had any problems with them. Am I just more tolerant of them? Or maybe my Canadian water works better with them? The world wonders

Thanks Mostrich - yes, after the random bench times I've had over the summer, I just want to make sure I'm doing SOMETHING at the bench, as often as possible. Last night I just felt like decals for some reason, despite the fact I still have to paint the canopies, tail gear, various antennas etc. The cats ( we have two of them ) usually drop in to look from time to time, but I don't let them get "involved" in the build.

Hmmmmmmmm...now that the cals are on and they have been lacquered and approved by the Agent I actually am warming up to your botched scheme a bit...things seemed toned down from the DISASTER pics I looked at before...

Of course you haven't added the tail planes yet and there's no telling what you did to those...probably will look like Picasso painted em or something...

I think the motteling came out very good. Nice usage of those cardboard shapes.

Thanks Manny! Yes, with the decals (mostly) down, the mottle doesn't look so heavy, more to look at right. And I do plan on doing one more wash WITH the decals in place. The white on "white 16" had yellowed a bit, but I like it, took the contrast down a touch. "red 13" still looks a little to contrast-y, weathering should knock that down some. Tailplanes were painted at the same time with the same paint mix etc etc as everything else, they'll be fine.

Thanks! Until I upgrade my airbrush situation, I use the cardboard masks like I've been doing for years now. Sometimes if the original looks heavy I'll dab the mottle on with the end of a Q-tip / cotton bud. Takes forever to do it without being too heavy, but not bad for the smaller scales. Nothing beats an airbrush though.
