Indeed! It’s one photo I use to restore faith in the project itself. I also have dipped a tentative toe in looking at aviation inspired painting. I believe all of us share a great affection for box art. I feel art is art, and the unsung box cover artist ought to be recognized for composition, color and all of the other components being brought together on a deadline!

I love aviation art. There used to be a shop/gallery in Fountain Valley right off the 405 that had a super selection of work. I really loved the work by one guy who concentrated more on the local aspects of the local region with the production and training in the area during WWII.

Do you happen to recall his name, or the name of the shop?

Well, by google search, it appears that the gallery has moved or is closed now. I’m coming up with nothing in that area. The closest aviation art gallery is now in Santa Ana.



But the artist who does the local influence stuff is Stan Vosberg. The F4U painting is probably my favorite of his work. The pier in the background, Balboa Pier, I am quite familiar with.

Another artist I really like is James Dietz. He does more military than strictly aviation stuff, but man it can be fantastic. Look up his stuff.

I tell you, aviation art is bloody hard - trying to accurately draw an airplane with it's curving in three dimensions, and still get it to look like it should do is extremely difficult - my hard off to anyone that can do it well.

When the mood hits I occasionally do a bit of coloured pencil and pastel work, I've only ever managed to draw an aircraft once - an A-7E. I would share it with you but alas I dropped a coffee on my sketchbook.
