As usual, before replying I spent a pleasant half an hour poking into the corners of the internet for information! I had to look up what a welles marking was, which is embarrassing but the truth. I made a sketch based on your progress the other day and that was one of the items I circled a question mark around. I was figuring out how the plane's identification number, the 'Black One," and balkenkrueze lateral placements were marked off. I found information at the Luftwaffe Archives to be very useful decoding what you are doing...
I spent another twenty minutes reading about Dortenmann on a WWII forum where his character was being discussed based on "Green Hearts," with many details coming from Dortenmann's journal. What was new to me was the high regard the younger pilots held for him. Apparently he "never lost a wingman when he made a kill," which showcases a person who has his leadership priorities in order, and he also refused to follow orders if the orders jeopardized the safety of his pilots. He was quite a formidable commander.
Finally, it remains utterly fascinating seeing you work on the smallest of details with such clean and clear techniques. There is much to study. Congratulations!

Thanks for the comments! I'm contemplating making another repair to the black/white stripe area. From most angles, the repaired area looks ok but from others, you can discern the edges of the repair. I've given the area a few clear coats already but I'm not 100% confident that additional coats will make that edge disappear. So... I may blow everything off, including decals, and start the stripe over. Maybe.

Good luck recuperating from fishing and cooking the spoils. I am looking forward to more surface finish effects and techniques on Black 1. What I am trying to wrap my head around is the amount of wear and tear as well as probable repairs on this particular aircraft. I was thinking Dortenman’s Diary might provide some clues. How do you determine your where or when date for the aircraft? Are you going to show how the aircraft looked during the last month of operation? When I find a photo of an aircraft that I appreciate it becomes attached to the project as a goal, what I am driving toward as the aim for the appearance, but perhaps I should use a collage style approach, and take a look at more generalized views as well...

Petri Heil, like we say in German. St. Petrus is the patron saint of the fisherman. One of the main churches in my hometown is dedicated to him.
