I watched a program on YouTube last night that showed the Midway battle from the Japanese viewpoint, was in three parts with lots of diagramming. They had no idea what they were getting into until it was all over. The Yorktown really had a bad day. But the Akagi did not look as good as your model by mid-morning!

I had a long description of the battle from Shattered Sword but alas, the post didn't load and I lost it. I'm not going to retype it so...
I installed the wood deck and painted the stripes on the stern. I need to touch them up.

I also experimented with some stain and weathering using oils. My goal is this, the only pictures I found of the Akagi's deck, and they're colorized.

Nothing like a real wood deck. Also great color photos.

Stick, I hope so. I only have the one.I wonder, would it be better to spray a gloss coat or just leave it porous? Or, stain the whole thing then gloss it for the stains?

That's the scary thing about stains, you only get one shot at it. If you gloss it first it won't take a stain, will it? Can you find some bass wood to practice with first, Steve?

Good question on whether to seal it with gloss coat. I'd test it on a scrap piece and see how it reacts.

Good idea guys.
So I took a few scrap pieces of the wood and sprayed gloss coat on one before stain and the other, after the stain. When dry, I added some "oil stains" then wiped them off to see how they looked. I like the sample where I sprayed one coat of gloss then the stain. Without the gloss coat, the stain seems to wash out the wood grain and the oil stain sets in more for some reason. I just need to come up with a proper color.
