SPA MODEL INTERVIEW WITH FULL METAL (GREG)
Repair of a PBR31MKII at an US Navy "ammi" pontoon
USMC at Funchilin Pass, Korea (December 1950)
Hi Greg!
What was your first model kit?
I really cannot remember. This was in the 80s. I think it was a German WW2 Hydroplane Matchbox-Dornier-Do-18D-2G in scale 1/72. I can still remember the color of the sprue a mix of green and pale blue.
What’s your preferred scale?
It depends on the subject I have in mind, it can be in whatever scale like: 1/35, 1/48, 1/72, 1/350 and even 28mm.
What’s your preferred subject or subjects?
I like to portray historical events and I try to reproduce them as realistically as possible using whatever documentation I can find, either pictures, books or Veteran’s interviews. I’m not a rivet counter, but I like when my builds are as historically accurate as possible. I also enjoy to go wild with Sci-fi especially the Warhammer 40K universe.
What’s your favorite model built to date?
It’s the RT CHISEL extraction Diorama.
The diorama was 3 builds in one; first of all there was the conversion of the Helicopter, that was used by the Green Hornets, then there was the terrain that took me ages to do. I was so crazy to add leaves on the trees one by one. Finally the 1/35 figures that were perfect for the diorama and the historically accurate.
What’s your hardest model built to date?
1/350 CV-5 Yorktown: the kit, per se, is not difficult, but is not accurate.
There were many issues and mistakes that were corrected and made historically accurate. So I can’t say it was the hardest but the longest; it took me 6 years to do it and it’s 100% finished, the crew is still missing on deck.
What’s your Holy Grail kit?
There are a couple, but one that I have to do before I die is the 1/48 or 1/32 F14 Tomcat.
Who’s your Favorite kit maker?
I don’t have a favorite brand, the kit must “talk” to me and I choose it for the theme I have in mind. For example, in my stash I have a AAVP7A1 to represent the USMC during Operation Iraqi Freedom and the battle that occurred at the Diyala bridge. The kit is from Hobby Boss.
What’s your favorite glue or glues?
I use Tamiya plastic cement, Ammo Mig plastic blue/red glues and of course, Cyanoacrylate Super glue.
What’s your favorite paint?
I only use Acrylics: Vallejo, Ammo Mig and AK interactive.
What started you as a modeler?
The passion of History.
