You mentioned thin layers of paint: what´s your thinning ratio? Tamiya acrylics used?

Hi Thomas - They are all Tamiya enamels. which my understanding requires less thinner to "thin them down."

I use a ration of 1 drops of paint to 5 drops of thinner… then adding another layer of 1 drop of paint to 8 drops of thinner. all in all in the hopes to make some 'irregularity' in the final paint scheme.

The ugly truth about TUDM (Malaysian Air Force) MiGs is that they are spankingly clean birds. every two years they get a nice clean coat of fresh paint, and those on the ground are very diligent at clean things up.

Now.. I started this build with the idea of making a bird that his pretty much dirty.. beaten.. chipped.. like many examples found in former soviet block users, E. Europe… C.Asia, S. Asia, or African users. With the "truth" exposed…. I am thinking of doing a "what if" version of the TUDM MiG-29s with a bit of wear and tear look. so… its not really going to be an "accurate" representation after all.

Here is the start of my 'weathering' process on the MiG-29. For starters, trying to imitate some grime, streak, soot. I used a mix of Tamiya Smoke and Tamiya Flat Black, very thinned 1:10 ration with the thinners. while keeping the PSI as low as 10 on my compressor.



Everything is glossy due to the Future floor polish. At this stage, weathering is light. just trying to get my feet wet. There are a ton of photo references of MiG-29s in sorry state. should be interesting!



I have also add more 'patch work' to the greys and greens, adding spots of paint using airbrush on limit sections of the aircraft to create a subtle blotchy look

Hi Thomas - Thanks. About the decals.. well… they look good on the sheet.. but once placed on the model, they are (1) low vis and (2) very tiny. so with that combination… I could see very little of the decals unless I want to strain my eyes. LoL

The decal was a mixed experience. first the good news: its thin, it has a very small carrier film. it works with Revell Soft and Mr. Mark Softener, the decal instruction sheet is top notch that shows you a lot of information on the Malaysian Fullcrums. The bad news: the tiny stencils were fuzzy and the decal adhere very weak on the surface.

I really like what I see, Monty. Keep up the good work, she's a monster for real!

Lately, I've been brushing on a little Future, just where the decal goes and just before placing the decal...instead of micro-set (or similar). I give it a few minutes before using micro-sol on top. That has helped me a lot!
