I would have used Perfect Putty instead. Easy to wet sand.
Speaking of sanding sticks, I use these...
Hobby Lobby has them.

Me, too. I have to get some “jo” back in the “mo”, first. Bad idea to start that many kits, I think. That and we had some church activities and the our sweet Ella got to feeling bad and ended up in the hospital...again. We have Asher and their dog.

I was thinking you could make paper templates for each intakes - and possibly make a folding design where the paper wraps around the intake vent.
I did have an alternate idea where you use a spatula (tongue depressor carved to fit) and some quick curing epoxy but I think that is gonna be too messy in the same way as adding putty will be.
The main advantage of paper is you can keep adjusting and cutting more intake vent covers until you are happy with the effect. As a final touch you can harden the paper with a light coat (this is critical, that it be a light coat) of superglue.

I need simple and straightforward these days. I’ve been noodling this around...kinda like an ear worn. If I can, I’ll try to draw a thought I had. Hate to waste those two years of high school drafting!

Simple is good. I only wish to add an easy and effective solution and I will stand behind a piece of paper covering, in this case! Cheers! And good luck. Also I get it about having too many irons in the fire. That’s why I’m moving at speed through the ‘67 Monogram Vigilante and keeping myself focused on the end goal rather than lost in whatever added detailing tasks keep popping up. I am going to finish the other half of sanding the fuselage tonight to keep on track for a week’s progress on this one.

I like the paper idea a lot. Then the over thinking takes over....hard to make the brain stop. M&Ms help.

Wow, this isn't the new Airfix kit is it? I built the 1/72 scale Airfix one and I don't remember ha;f these issues. Looks like you're getting them under control man. Keep at it Lyle, I want to see this one finished.
